This ancient plantation house, an hour north of St George’s, is being restored to become a unique ‘eco-spa’, opening in 2008. Guest rooms will be simply furnished; some with sea-view terraces and all backing onto colourful, luxuriant gardens and the mountains beyond.

Relax and go native in this old colonial-style setting. Rattan furniture, billowing white drapes and ceiling fans are the look; bring your sarong and bikini for the day, and kaftan or slightly dressier for dinner  - and don’t forget your pashmina as it’s definitely cooler in the evening. The ambience is ‘house-party’ style, as established by Peter de Savary at Skibo Castle in Scotland.

The repertoire of treatments is based on holistic, traditional methods which can be combined with yoga, Pilates, reflexology, ayurveda and hiking for the more adventurous. Enjoy riding a donkey to the magnificent Tufton Waterfall for a swim in it’s mountain pools.

To dine at Tufton Hall is to go back in time to a different era: colonial furnishings, dramatic candlelight and the nightly chorus of the native bull-frogs. The food though is modern, organic and nutritious. Courses are light, fresh, and deliciously seasoned with local herbs and spices. You’ll be encouraged to treat yourself to  fresh herbal infusions throughout the day or delicious tropical smoothies based on fruits from the plantation. Wine, however, is not off limits!
With Tufton’s grown-up feel, continue the house party! This is the perfect place to while away the evening, or join other guests on the veranda for a game of bridge, carom or backgammon. Children under 16 are not permitted.
